Monday 1st December 1919

Ptes. Thomas Henry Bennett (see 14th September), Tom Clay (see 4th September), Joseph Harpin (see 14th September) and James Frederick Palmer (see 14th September), who had been serving on attachment from 8th Yorks. and Lancs. at Scutari (modern day Uskudar) in Istanbul, were posted back to England for demobilization.


A partial payment was made of the war gratuity due in respect of the late CSM James Davis MM (see 6th May 1918), who had died of wounds in June 1917; his widow, Charlotte, who had re-married and was now Mrs. Charlotte Preskey, would receive £6 10s. The reason why the balance, of £13, would remain, as yet, unpaid, is unknown.

Payment of a £9 war gratuity was authorised in respect of the late L.Cpl. Smith Hesselden (see 29th January), who had died of wounds in July 1918; the payment would go to his widow, Lily.

Payment of a £9 war gratuity was authorised in respect of the late Pte. Fred Ainley (see 4th December 1917) who had been killed in the German shelling of Ypres in January 1917; the payment would go to his mother, Emma.

Payment of a £13 10s. war gratuity was authorised in respect of the late Pte. George Bentley (see 30th January), who had been killed in action in October 1917; the payment would go to his widow, Daisy.

Payment of a £6 war gratuity was authorised in respect of the late Pte. Leonard Watling (see 17th June), who had died of wounds in October 1917; the payment would go to his grandmother and legatee, Ann Eliza Debenham.

Payment of a £6 war gratuity was authorised in respect of the late Pte. Walter Kenyon Whitehead (see 13th February 1918) who had been killed in action in September 1917; the payment would go to his executors, his father William and his married sister, Alice Arguile.

Pte. Arthur Schofield (see 29th October 1918) was formally transferred to the Army Reserve Class Z.

The sentence of two years’ imprisonment with hard labour, which had been imposed on Pte. John Bayliss (see 20th August) in December 1918 for having been found sleeping whilst on sentry duty, was formally remitted by the military authorities in Italy.

Pte. Charles Clear (see 9th May), serving with the 2nd Battalion Lincolnshire Regiment at Kirkee Barracks, Colchester, was reported as having been ‘late falling in on parade’; he would be confined to barracks for four days.

Payment of a £6 10s. war gratuity was authorised in respect of the late Cpl. John Henry Hitchin (see 16th October 1918), who had been killed in the sinking of the troopship HMS Aragon in December 1917; the payment would go to his father, John.

Payment of a £5 10s. war gratuity was authorised in respect of the late Pte. George William Cook (see 19th December 1917), who had been killed in action in June 1917; the payment would go to his father, John.

Payment of a £9 war gratuity was authorised in respect of the late Pte. Harry Exley (see 24th June 1918), who had been killed in action in November 1917 while serving with 2nd/6th DWR; the payment would go to his brother, John.

Wednesday 26th November 1919


Pte. James William Kershaw MM (12519; 60065) (see 14th November) was formally discharged from the Army on grounds of sickness. A medical examination carried out in Halifax assessed him as having suffered less than 20% disability which was likely to last for less than six months and therefore ineligible for an Army pension. His condition was summarised as follows: “1. Frost bite (1914); nothing abnormal detected in feet now, all movements perfect. 2. Gas poisoning (1915); complains of shortness of breath, lungs clear, heart normal. 3. Gunshot wound, right leg (1916); through and through. Entrance irregular oval pear 1” inner side calf, non adherent. Exit similar scar adherent to fascia 2 ½“ behind outside scar. Some loss of muscle tissue, no bone or nerve lesion, walks well.”

Norman Wilson (see 28th March 1918) who had been killed in action in October 1917; the payment would go to his father, Joseph. Sgt. Wilson’s brother, Pte. Harold Kershaw Wilson, 21st West Yorks., had also been killed in action, on 26th April 1918.

Payment of a £13 10s. war gratuity was authorised in respect of the late Pte. John Buckley (see 6th September 1918), who was presumed dead having been officially missing in action since September 1917; the payment would go to his mother, Sarah.

Pte. George William Ball (see 6th October), who had been serving with the Military Foot Police at Arquata Scrivia, was posted to England for demobilization.

Pte. Edward Smitham, the eldest son of Sgt. George Edward Smitham (see 20th June), serving with 83rd Company, Labour Corps in France, departed on two weeks’ leave to England.

Pte. Thomas Henry Cox (25806) (see 12th October), who was serving at the Base Depot at Arquata Scrivia, was posted back to England for demobilization.


Maj. Robert Harwar Gill DSO (see 7th October), who had been under treatment at 3rd London General Hospital, Wandsworth for the wounds he had suffered in October 1918, was granted two months’ leave, on the expiry of which he was to return to hospital.

A/CQMS John William Baird (see 21st April) was formally transferred to the Army Reserve Class Z.

Pte. Wilson Sunderland was also formally transferred to the Army Reserve Class Z; he was a 33 year-old dyers’ labourer from Bradford and was married with one child. In the absence of a surviving service record I am unable to establish when he had joined 10DWR or any details of his military service.

Payment of a £17 10s. war gratuity was authorised in respect of the late Sgt. George Thomas Bates (see 20th August 1918), who had died in November 1917 while serving with 32nd Company, Labour Corps; the payment would go to his widow, Emily.

Thursday 13th November 1919

Pte. John Henshall (see 26th July), serving with 2DWR, was reported as on a charge of ‘Neglect of duty; ie absent off his post after having been posted as sentry’; he would placed under ‘open arrest’ and would be ordered to undergo 14 days’ detention.

Lt. Andrew Aaron Jackson (see 22nd August), who had been in England since having been wounded in August 1918, formally relinquished his commission on grounds of ill health caused by his wounds.

Payment of a £6 war gratuity was authorised in respect of the late Pte. Fred Hargreaves (20214) (see 1st November 1918), who had been officially missing in action since 1st October 1917; the payment would go to his widow, Phyllis.

Payment of an £18 war gratuity was authorised in respect of the late Pte. George Hartell (see 28th February 1918), who had been killed in action on 20th September 1917; the payment would go to his mother, Edith.

Payment of a £11 10s. war gratuity was authorised in respect of the late Pte. George Holmes (15231) (see 19th November 1917), who had died of wounds in June 1917; the payment would go to his sister and sole legatee, Elizabeth Williams.

Payment of a £4 10s. war gratuity was authorised in respect of the late Pte. Stanley Roebuck Hutton (see 23rd March 1918), who had been killed in action in September 1917; the payment would go to his widow, Mary Alice.

Payment of a £4 war gratuity was authorised in respect of the late Pte. David Lindsay (see 2nd May 1918), who had died of wounds in September 1917; the payment would go to his widow, Esther.

Payment of a £4 war gratuity was authorised in respect of the late L.Cpl. James Lister Petty (see 4th April 1918), who had been killed in action in September 1917. Although Petty had been a married man, the payment would go to his executor, Arthur Telford Smith.

Payment of a £3 war gratuity was authorised in respect of the late Pte. Arthur Thornton (see 8th April 1918) who had been killed in action in September 1917; the payment would go to his widow, Edith.

Wednesday 12th November 1919

A pension award was made in the case of the Pte. Thomas Laytham (see 23rd May), who had been been discharged to the Army Reserve Class Z in March; he was diagnosed as suffering from ‘orchitis, traumatic’ (inflammation of the testicles, due to injury) and, being considered to have suffered a temporary 20% disability, was awarded 5.s 6d. per week, for one year only. 

A package of personal effects belonging to the late Pte. Matthew Henry Jubb (see 1st November), who had died of wounds behind German lines in April 1918, while serving with 1st/4th DWR, was despatched to his widow; the parcel comprised of “wallet, photos, letters”.

Payment of an £8 10s. war gratuity was authorised in respect of the late L.Sgt. Albert Bradley (see 8th Jaunary 1918), who had died of wounds in October 1917; the payment would go to his mother, Elizabeth.

Payment of an £11 10s. war gratuity was authorised in respect of the late Pte. Albert Edward Dury (see 6th April 1918) who had been killed in action in October 1916; the payment would go to his mother, Sarah.

Tuesday 11th November 1919


Lt. George Clifford Sugden MC (see 24th February) and 2Lt. Christopher Longstaff (see 8th November) were formally released from military service.

Pte. John Kelly (18983; 60001) DCM (see 28th February) was formally discharged from the Army on account of wounds suffered in action (details unknown).

Cpl. Stanley Arthur Bones (see 18th October) wrote to the Infantry Records Office in York regarding the presentation of the Croix de Guerre which he had been awarded, “I have waited to hear from you for several months but have heard nothing further. As stated, I should prefer my medal to be presented to me in public, but, as I may be leaving Colchester at the end of the present year, I trust the matter may have your attention as soon as possible. Kindly let me hear from you by return informing me when the presentation can be fixed”. The response of the Infantry Records Office and the outcome are unknown.

A payment of £5 18s. 9d. was authorised, being the amount due in pay and allowances to the late Pte. Joe Anderson (see 1st March 1918), who had died of wounds in September 1917; the payment would go to his widow, Edith.

Payment of a £13 10s. war gratuity was authorised in respect of the late Pte. William Denby (see 10th January 1918), who had been killed in action in September 1917; the payment would be divided equally between his father, William, and his “friend, Mrs. Ellen Brogen”.

Payment of a £13 10s. war gratuity was authorised in respect of the late Pte. Harold Shaw (12758) (see 4th April 1918), who had been killed in action in September 1917; the payment would go to his mother, Martha.

Monday 10th November 1919

Pte. James Slinger (see 21st October), serving with 8th Yorks. and Lancs. at Crowborough, was examined by an Army Medical Board. He was claiming an Army pension on the grounds that he “Had teeth extracted at Fiume and Malta but, owing to movement of the Battalion and rapid demobilization, dentures could not be obtained”. The Board found that, if dentures were provided, he would have suffered no disability; he was therefore recommended for further dental treatment but his pension appeal was rejected.

Pte. Robert Ellis Clayton (see 2nd September), was released from detention having completed his sentence for having been absent without leave from the Labour Corps; whilst in detention he had spent two weeks in hospital, being treated for gonorrhoea.

Ptes. Harry Bailey (25198) (see 12th September) and Charley Culley (see 12th September), who had both been in England since September, after serving with 8th Yorks. and Lancs. at Fiume, were formally transferred to the Army Reserve Class Z.

Payment of a £14 10s. war gratuity was authorised in respect of the late Cpl. George Herbert Moody (see 23rd March 1918), who had been killed in action in September 1917; the payment would go to his widow, Annie.

Payment of a £3 war gratuity was authorised in respect of the late Pte. Harry Bradshaw (see 12th July), who had been killed in action in September 1917; the payment would go to his father, Harry.

Payment of a £5 war gratuity was authorised in respect of the late Pte. Joshua Crossley (see 2nd November 1917) who had died from measles and pneumonia while in training in November 1914; the payment would go to his mother, Mary. It is unclear why this payment was authorised as in other cases where men had served for less than six months it was determined that they were therefore ineligible for a war gratuity. This was the case with Ptes. Harold Greenhow (see 5th July 1915) and Walter Isherwood (see 11th October 1918), both of whom had also died whilst in training in the Autumn of 1914.

Payment of a £6 war gratuity was authorised in respect of the late Pte. Thomas Manuell (see 10th April 1918) who had been killed in action in September 1917; the payment would go to his father, Joe.

Payment of a £13 10s. war gratuity was authorised in respect of the late Pte. Frank Miller (see 19th February), who had been officially ‘missing in action’ since October 1917; the payment would go to his mother, Mary.

A payment of £15 17s. 11d. was authorised, being the amount due in pay and allowances, including a war gratuity of £11, to the late L.Cpl. Arthur Clark MM (25966) (see 22nd October), who had been officially missing in action since 26th August 1918; the payment would go to his widow, Lilian.

Payment of a £4 10s. war gratuity was authorised in respect of the late L.Cpl. George William Foster (see 12th February 1918) who had been killed in action in September 1917; the payment would go to his father, Holmes.

Payment of a £3 war gratuity was authorised in respect of the late Pte. Benjamin Beaumont (known as Ben) (see 1st October 1918), who had been killed in action in September 1917; the payment would go to his father, Benjamin.

Thursday 6th November 1919

Pte. Joseph William Carter (see 21st October), serving with 8th Battalion Yorks. and Lancs. at Crowborough, was reported as “absent from tattoo roll call until 9.25pm; total absence 5 minutes”; he was ordered to be confined to barracks for three days.

Pte. Edwin John Collard (see 25th April), who had been serving with the Royal Munster Fusilers, was formally discharged from the Army as no longer physically fit for service on account of “debility following operation for hernia”; he was assessed as having suffered 60% disability and was awarded an Army pension of £2 10s. 6d. per week.

Payment of a £14 10s. war gratuity was authorised in respect of the late Cpl. Edward Woffindale (see 16th October 1918), who had been killed in action in September 1917; the payment would go to his father, Henry.

Payment of a £13 10s. war gratuity was authorised in respect of the late Pte. Joseph Dobson MM (see 11th December 1918), who had died of wounds in September 1917; the payment would go to his father, Matthew. Although his dependants would not be awarded an Army pension, at some point (date unknown) his sister, Annie, would receive a gratuity payment of £27 6s.

Payment of a £3 war gratuity was authorised in respect of the late Pte. John Greenwood (see 27th June 1917) who had died of wounds following German shelling of Ypres in January 1917; the payment would go to his brother, Harry.

Payment of a £3 war gratuity was authorised in respect of the late Pte. Thomas Henry Hanson (see 31st December 1917), who had been killed in action in June 1917; the payment would go to his widow, Sarah, who had recently re-married and was now Mrs. Leach.

Payment of a £5 10s. war gratuity was authorised in respect of the late Pte. Albert Edward Lawton (see 5th January 1917), who had been killed whilst on patrol in January 1916; the payment would go to his widow, Jane, who had recently re-married and was now Mrs. Galtross.

Payment of a £3 war gratuity was authorised in respect of the late Pte. Luther Taylor (see 13th February 1918), who had been killed in action in May 1917; the payment would go to his mother, Alice. She would also be awarded an Army pension (details unknown) in respect of both Luther and his younger brother, Arnold, who had been killed in action in August 1918.

Payment of a £3 war gratuity was authorised in respect of the late Pte. Thomas Wilcock (see 6th April 1918), who had been killed in action in September 1917; the payment would go to his widow, Ethel, who had re-married and was now Mrs. Griffin.
