Billets at Arzignano

A Battalion sports day would be held over the next two days, with events commencing at 1pm each day. Capt. Leonard Norman Phillips MC (see 11th November)  was the official starter for all events; the judges were Capt. John Edward Lennard Payne DSO, MC (see 2nd December), Capt. Dick Bolton MC (see 5th December), Battalion Chaplain, Rev. Hugh Wilfrid Todd (see 27th July), Battalion Medical Officer Capt. Norman Robert Davis (see 25th August) and 2Lt. Cyril Edward Agar (see 26th September); and clerk of the course was 2Lt. Mark Allan Stanley Wood MC (see 2nd December), assisted by the Company Sergeant Majors. Cash prizes were provided for each event and points were also to be awarded towards the Battalion competition. The first day’s events were the heats of the 100 yards and quarter mile; the half mile; the Company relay race; the long jump; high jump and putting the weight. Unfortunately the individual competitors and results are not known.

Cpl. Bertie Thurling (see 9th November) was discharged from 62nd General Hospital at Bordighera, near Ventimiglia and posted to “Caesar’s Camp” at Arquata Scrivia.

Pte. John Henry Crawshaw (see 27th November), serving in France with 1st/7th DWR, was appointed (unpaid) Acting Lance Corporal.
Cpl. William Foulds (see 15th November) was discharged from the Military Hospital in Halifax and returned to duty at the Regimental Depot.
The War Office wrote to the father of Maj. Herbert St. John Carr West (see 11th November), who had died of wounds on 27th October, to inform him that his son was buried at Lancenigo Communal Cemetery Extension, Villorba. There had already been a query raised by Maj. Carr-West’s widow over a possible dispute between herself and his parents over the administration of his affairs.
