Wednesday 13th December 1916

Infantry Barracks in Ypres

Working parties were again provided overnight.

Pte. Stanley Hirst (see 12th November) found himself on a charge, having been found guilty of “irregular conduct in having a dirty rifle on 1.30pm inspection parade”; his offence was reported by Sgt. Smith (unidentified) and his sentence, of five days confined to barracks, was ordered by Capt. Leo Frederick Reincke (see 12th December).
There was leave to England for some men of the Battalion. Among those going back to England on ten days’ leave are known to have been CSM Albert Edgar Palmer (see 2nd August), A/Sgt. Charles Marsden (see 29th August) and Pte. Ben Butler (see 3rd November).
There was also leave for former members of the Company. Sgt. Frederick Griggs MM (see 8th December), who had been one of Tunstill’s original Company but was now serving with 2DWR, also returned to England on ten days’ leave. 2Lt. Tom Pickles (see 20th September), formerly of Tunstill’s Company, but now serving with 9DWR, left his unit to proceed to England on ten days’ leave.

Pte. John Beaumont (see 28th October 1915), serving in France with the Motor Transport Section of the Army Service Corps, departed for England on ten days’ leave.

2Lt. Charles Crowther Hart (see 15th November), now serving with 3DWR at North Shields, having been wounded on the Somme in July, was promoted Acting Lieutenant whilst holding his current appointment (the details of which are unknown).
