L.Cpl. Charles Thomas Mitchell (see 28th
April) was reported by Sgt. William
Eley (see 30th July), L.Cpls. Harry Waddington (see 19th
June) and Benjamin Hebblethwaite for ‘Insubordinate conduct to an
NCO and obstructing an NCO in the execution of his duty’; on the orders of Lt.Col.
Bartholomew he would be deprived of his Lance Corporal’s rank and revert to
Private.
Pte. John Charles
Brison Redfearn (see 11th
August) was promoted Lance Corporal. This was also the day on which
Redfearn is recorded as having disembarked for service in France although the
Battalion, along with the rest of 23rd Division did not receive
orders to embark for France until two days later. It is possible that as one of
the Battalion scouts, Redfearn, with others, had been despatched early to
prepare for the arrival of the main body of troops.
Gnr. John George Waggitt,
arrived in England with 5th Artillery Brigade, Canadian
Expeditionary Force; they were to be based initially at Otterpool Camp, near
Pymouth. John George Waggitt was the brother of Pte. Willie Waggitt (see 8th
August) who had recently been wounded in action and would, on his recovery,
serve with Tunstill’s Company.
