Pte. Tom Darwin was
punished for his having been absent without leave for the week prior to the
Battalion’s embarkation for France (see
26th August); he was awarded seven days’ field punishment number
two (to be shackled but not to any fixed object as was the case with the hated
field punishment number one) and forfeited eight days’ pay.
