Training continued. The twice-postponed Brigade exercise to
test communication between infantry and aircraft at last went ahead “in spite
of a misty morning and poor visibility”. The Battalion War Diary recorded
simply “practice for signalling between aircraft and infantry”. Later in the
day the weather became very cold.
Pte. Sydney Exley
(see 5th January), who had
been wounded ten days previously, was evacuated to England from 8th
Stationery Hospital at Wimereux. He travelled onboard the hospital ship Carisbroke Castle and on arrival in
England was transferred to hospital in Bristol.
Pte. Lewis Walton
(see 13th November 1916),
serving with 83rd Training Reserve Battalion at Gateshead, was
transferred to 3DWR at North Shields.
Lt. Cecil Edward
Merryweather (see 14th December
1916), currently on home service with the RFA, appeared before a further
Medical Board at the Military Hospital at Ripon. The Board found that, “he has
been under treatment and his headaches are less frequent. He should be fit for
general service in three weeks”.
