Sunday 6th December 1914

Frederick Hird (see 10th September) made his application for a Temporary Commission; he would become one of the original officers attached to Tunstill’s Company. Hird’s application was endorsed by no less a figure than Lord Ronald Gower, a noted politician, sculptor, writer and socialite. Gower was engaged in a long-term relationship with Hird’s elder brother, Frank, a well-known journalist and author.

Portraits of Lord Gower and Frank Hird, both painted by Henry Scott Tuke.
