Saturday 6th October 1917

Most of the Battalion in camp (name unknown) north-west of Ypres; D Company and one platoon of B Company remained at Berthen, attached to 8Yorks.

A very cold and wet day.
The Battalion was attached to 2nd Battalion Canadian Railway Troops for work in the construction of a light railway.
Sgt. Christopher Clapham (see 26th September) was reported by Cpl. James Henry Howarth (see 12th August) as having been, “absent from 10pm until reporting to the Corporal of the Guard at 10.35pm”; he would be severely reprimanded by Capt. John Edward Lennard Payne (see 1st October).

Pte. John Collins (see 5th October), who had only joined the Battalion the previous day, was reported by A/CSM John William Wardman (see 20th September) and Cpl. James Henry Howarth (see above) for ‘not complying with an order; ie failing to show greatcoat on kit inspection’; he would be confined to barracks for 14 days.
L.Cpl. Arthur Lee MM (see 16th September) was promoted Corporal.
A.Sgt. Thomas Walsh (see 17th August), who had been posted back to England six weeks previously, was posted to No.4 Officer Cadet Battalion at Oxford to begin a course of officer training.

A payment of £2 12s. 1d. was authorised, being the amount due in pay and allowances to the late Pte. Samuel Sharp (see 7th June) who had been killed in action on 6th June; the payment would go to his widow, Alice. A parcel of his personal effects was also sent to his widow; this comprised of “pocket wallet, photos, card, purse”.
