Sunday 10th September 1916

Billets in and around Eperlecques

At 6.55am the Battalion assembled on the Gandspette to Ouest Mont Road and began the eight mile march north-west to Audruicq, via the Foret d’Eperlecques, Muncq Nieurelet, Polincove and Blanc-Pignon. 2Lt. John Keighley Snowden (see 30th July) of A Company was detailed to march at the rear of the Battalion, along with an NCO from each Company, to prevent stragglers. The transport was to follow at 5.10pm the same day, under the command of Lt. John Edward Lennard Payne (see 2nd September). At Audruicq the Battalion was embarked on a train for Longueau, south-east of Amiens, leaving at 10.39 pm on the evening of the 10th. The 115 mile journey through the night would take almost eight hours.

2Lt. Arthur Poynder Garratt (see 7th July), who had been accidentally injured while serving in France with 9DWR, and had spent more than two months recuperating in England, was now sufficiently recovered for home service and joined 3DWR at North Shields.
