Rest and training continued.
In the calmer conditions which now prevailed following the
actions of the previous days, Capt. James
Christopher Bull (see 10th
July) wrote a personal cheque in the sum of £9 16s., being an amount he
owed to the late 2Lt. Walter Douglas
Taylor (see 6th July),
who had been killed in action on 5th July; Taylor had been President
of the Company Officer’s Mess. Taylor being dead, Bull left the payee blank but
placed his cheque along with the remaining personal effects of 2Lt. Taylor.
Pte. James Leonard
Bloomer (see 9th July),
attached to the Base Details Battalion at Etaples, was admitted to 24th
General Hospital at Etaples, suffering from pain in the amputation stump of the
finger of his left hand; three days later he would be evacuated to England and
admitted to 2nd Northern General Hospital, Beckett Park, Leeds, for
further treatment.
Pte.Thomas Walter Mellin (see 10th
July), who had suffered relatively minor wounds to his right arm in the
actions around Contalmaison, was discharged from hospital in Etaples, but
rather than re-joining 10DWR he was, instead, posted to 9DWR.
The funeral of 2Lt. Christopher
Snell (see 15th July),
who had died of wounds received in action on 5th July, took place at
Brixton Independent Church at 3pm, followed by interment at Streatham Cemetery,
Garratt Lane, Tooting.
2Lt. Christopher Snell |
Pte. Fred Dyson (see 5th May) was posted to
France to 34th Infantry Base Depot at Etaples en route to join 2DWR
on active service; he would later be commissioned and serve with 10DWR.
