The Germans occupied Lille and Mezieres; the British abandoned St Quentin.

Arthur Metcalfe (see 7^th August), elder brother of Tunstills Man Albert Metcalfe of Cowling, was taken prisoner whilst serving as a stretcher bearer with 2^nd Battalion Royal Munster Fusiliers during the retreat from Mons. He would remain a prisoner of war until escaping in September 1918.
