The War Office wrote to the mother of 2Lt. John Selby Armstrong Smith (see 2^nd August), who had previously served with 10DWR, but had been reported wounded and missing in action in April 1917 while serving with 9DWR; “I am commanded by the Army Council to inform you that the acceptance for official purposes of the death of Second Lieutenant J.S.A. Smith, West Riding Regiment, has been postponed hitherto in accordance with your wishes. A long period has now elapsed since the conclusion of hostilities and experience has shown that no Officer who has been missing for so long (and of whom now news has been received) can have survived. The Council regret that the time has now come when the acceptance of his death for official purposes cannot be postponed further. In view therefore of the lapse of time and the absence of news the Council are regretfully constrained to conclude that Second Lieutenant Smith died on or since 25^th April 1917 and I am to express their sympathy with you in your bereavement. I am to add this if any reliable information of his fate is received it will be communicated to you”.

L.Cpl. John William Kirby (see 9^th September), who had been in England on leave from 8^th Yorks. and Lancs., was transferred to 3^rd Yorks. and Lancs.

Payment of a £7 war gratuity was authorised in respect of the late Pte. Joseph Clayton (see 21^st November 1917), who had died in November 1917 whilst serving with 83^rd Training Reserve Battalion at Gateshead; the payment would go to his father, William.


A payment of £10 14s. 11d. comprising the amount due in pay and allowances, along with a war gratuity of £8 10s., was authorised in respect of the late Pte. Matthew Henry Jubb (see 10^th June), who had died of wounds behind German lines in April 1918, while serving with 1^st/4^th DWR; the payment would go his widow, Annie.

L.Cpl. Henry Edgar Grass (see 19^th September), serving in India with 1DWR, embarked onboard the SS Sicilia at Karachi to return to England for demobilization.

Fred Light Pashley (see 21^st November 1918), who had been presumed dead having been posted ‘missing in action’ on 20^th September 1917; there had been an exchange of correspondence regarding who should be the beneficiaries of his estate and the payment would go to his mother, Annie.

Payment of a £3 war gratuity was authorised in respect of the late Cpl. Dennis Bradbury (see 15^th October 1917), who had been killed in action in June 1917; the payment would be divided evenly between his two married sisters, Edith Armitage and Emily Muschamp.

Payment of a £3 war gratuity was authorised in respect of the late Pte. Harold Precious (see 8^th December 1918) who had died at the East Leeds War Hospital on 4^th July 1918, a month after having been wounded; the payment would go to his mother, Ann.

Payment of a £3 war gratuity was authorised in respect of the late Pte. Hector Salembier (see 27^th November 1918), who had been killed in action in June 1917; Salembier’s father being French, the payment was to be made via the Consul General of France. However, the family’s application for an Army pension had been rejected.
